Common Questions

Words are counted by splitting the text on whitespace characters (spaces, tabs, newlines). Empty entries are excluded. This means hyphenated words like "state-of-the-art" count as 1 word, while "hello world" counts as 2. Contractions like "don't" also count as 1 word.

We use 238 words per minute for silent reading (the widely accepted average for English text). Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, which is the average for conversational speech. Both are rounded up to the nearest minute. These are estimates �� actual time depends on content complexity and individual reading speed.

Characters (total) includes every character: letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces, and line breaks. Characters (no spaces) excludes all whitespace characters (spaces, tabs, newlines). The latter is useful for platforms like Twitter that count characters excluding spaces, or for calculating the density of meaningful content.
